“Two Evenings of New Music” begin with a solo performance by Josie Roth on viola, voice and effects, assisted by the Illustrious Theater Orchestra. The second of the two programs, called “Music From the Autonomous Zone,” is next Saturday.

4pm Pop Music

Paulina Rubio is suddenly everywhere, including Saturday’s edition of Reventon Super Estrella at the Arrowhead Pond. The show is Latin pop’s equivalent of the wide-ranging Wango Tango festival, which the Mexican former kiddie pop star also played recently. In addition to Rubio’s frisky pop, the music runs from the moody rock en espanol of Argentina’s Enanitos Verdes to the energetic merengue of Puerto Rico’s Elvis Crespo. Others on the bill include Rabanes, Pilar Montenegro, Aleks Syntek, Kabah and Fey.

“3 by Shakespeare’s Skum,” is the West Coast premiere of a trio of Shakespeare parodies by Carolyn Spedden. “Tag Team Romeo and Juliet,” “Leave It to Hamlet” and “Macbeth in 20 Minutes or Less” are presented outdoors by the Culver City Public Theatre. Bring blankets or low-profile lawn chairs for seating.

Carl St.Clair conducts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony this week in the Pacific Symphony’s summer home, the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. Vocal soloists are Jane Jennings, Jennifer Roderer, Robert Bracey and Derrick Parker. The contrasting first half of the outdoor event is devoted to Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos, K. 365, in which the soloists are Arianna Goldina and Remy Loumbrozo.

Once upon a time, a lovesick imp named Assetniuq changed into human form with the help of an evil shape-shifter named Melekelem. But her transformation unraveled when Melekelem ran afoul of the Royal Imp Jester and his protector, the good shape-shifter Abanaba. We won’t reveal how it all ended, but we can promise merriment and a lesson about being yourself when the dancers of the Auricle Ensemble and the percussionists of Looney Brooms get together to perform “Then Came the Imps.” The 50-minute “Imp Ballet” by Tim Bender and Jeanette Wrate is the obvious main event, but the program also includes the drum solo “Three Views of Rumi” and a whimsical showpiece for group percussion titled “Harold’s Hobo.” Loquat-colored costumes are featured in a definitive display of imp chic.
