Returning to the Hollywood Bowl after an eight-year hiatus, American conductor Gerard Schwarz, right, leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the same Mozart program Tuesday and Thursday nights. With Canadian pianist Stewart Goodyear as soloist, Schwarz conducts “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” the beloved D-minor Piano Concerto and the Symphony No. 36, “Linz.” Music director of the L.A. Chamber Orchestra in one of its golden periods (1978-86), Schwarz has been at the helm of the Seattle Symphony for 20 years and music director of the New York Chamber Symphony for 26.

“Austin Powers in Goldmember” marks Mike Myers’ third outing as the international man of mystery, and he again does battle with himself as he also plays his archenemy, Dr. Evil. Michael Caine and Beyonce Knowles join series veterans Michael York, Robert Wagner, Seth Green, Mindy Sterling and Verne J. Troyer for director Jay Roach. Opens Friday.

Theater

South Coast Repertory’s 17th annual Hispanic Playwrights Project kicks off on Saturday with the reprise of last year’s “California Scenarios,” one-act plays about the Latino experience in California. The two-week event will again be staged in the outdoor site that inspired the works: the 1.6-acre “California Scenario” garden in Costa Mesa, created by sculptor Isamu Noguchi to celebrate the state’s varied landscapes. The plays include “Desert Longing, or Las Aventureras” by Anne Garcia-Romero, “The Gardens of Aztlan (An Acto Hecho a Mano)” by Luis Alfaro, “References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot” by Jose Rivera, “Odysseus Cruz” by Jose Cruz Gonzalez and “Josefa” by Richard Coca.

Also: Daniel J. Travanti stars as a father whose decision to compromise the integrity of his work during World War II comes back to haunt him in Arthur Miller’s powerful morality play, “All My Sons,” directed by Richard Seer at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego’s Balboa Park. Opens Saturday.

Art

In a city known for creative animation, LACMA offers a new exhibition that turns the form on its ear. South African artist William Kentridge, the subject of a survey opening today, composes short animated films from thousands of gritty charcoal drawings. The drawings are made and erased in the filmmaking process, and often address the complex political and historical realities of his homeland. The survey will include 11 animated films, more than 60 drawings, two sculptural installations, and video presentation of theater and opera productions designed and scripted by Kentridge.

Dance

Illuminating the creative process, Ballet Pacifica’s annual three-week workshop culminates in the Pacifica Choreographic Workshop on Saturday at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Works-in-progress created by Shawn Hounsell of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Ryan Kelly of New York City Ballet, Davis Robertson of the Joffrey Ballet and Sarah Slipper of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet form the event’s core, but the audience is invited to participate in the post-performance debriefing led by company artistic director Molly Lynch.

Pop Music

Two of folk-pop-rock’s prominent female artists are jumping on the diversification bandwagon with their current concert tours. Jewel’s “This Way” road show comes with an opening segment called “Soul City Cafe,” designed to showcase developing talent. At L.A.’s Greek Theatre on Friday, the lineup includes Scooter Scudieri, Edify and Nafeesa Monroe. Meanwhile Sheryl Crow, left, headlines the Jeep World Outside Festival, coming to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine on Saturday with Ziggy Marley, Train, O.A.R. and a host of second-stage performers.
