Is This Drysdale’s Sunset Year?

Share

Trainer Neil Drysdale has won a lot of major races during a career that earned him election to the sport’s hall of fame in 2000.

He ranks seventh on the all-time list at Hollywood Park with 60 stakes victories, but one race has escaped him.

Drysdale has yet to win the Sunset Handicap, a Grade II at 1 1/2 miles, a fact he’ll try to change today when he sends out Slew The Red against six others in the $250,000 closing-day feature.

If the 5-year-old son of Red Ransom is successful, it will also provide the trainer with his first stakes win of the meet, and the dark bay is one of the top contenders in a weak renewal of the Sunset.

The stakes is the second race in a pick six that has a carryover of $191,457. There is a mandatory payout because it is closing day.

Bobby Frankel, the meet’s leading trainer, will attempt to collect his third Sunset win when he saddles Lord Flasheart, the 9-5 favorite on Russ Hudak’s morning line.

Hollywood Park isn’t the only track closing up shop. Belmont Park concludes its spring-summer meet as the scene in New York shifts to Saratoga on Wednesday.

Race of the day: The eighth at Hollywood Park is a competitive turf sprint for $50,000 claimers. Contenders include FJ’s Pace, the 3-1 favorite, Cryhavoc, Johnny Be Good, Champ’s Star and Is It True Mex.

Who’s hot: Iggy Puglisi. The jockey had three victories Friday night with two of the wins coming for trainer Paul Aguirre.
