The city dedicated a new seaside park Tuesday that will offer the public a rare view of the ocean from Pacific Coast Highway.

Browns’ Park, on a 25-foot-by-100-foot strip of land connecting the highway to the sea in the 500 block of South Coast Highway, has a winding pathway leading to a wooden platform overlooking the ocean. “We are pleased to have worked with the city to make this park a reality,” said Paul Morabito, chairman of the California Coastal Conservancy.

The land--worth well over $1 million--was donated to the city in 1999 by Joseph E. Brown of Rochester, N.Y., whose family had owned it since the 1930s. A small two-story home at the site was demolished by the city after sustaining major damage during the El Nino storms of 1997.

“My family enjoyed it for nearly 60 years,” Brown told The Times in March. “Now many families can enjoy it.”
