Nation Calls for Aid to Prevent Famine

Eritrea warned that a severe drought threatened to cause famine unless the international community quickly sent more food to the small northeast African state.
Without rain in recent months, farmers who make up the bulk of Eritrea’s 3.7 million people have been unable to plant crops.
“The entirety of Eritrea’s farming population will thus face the threat of a serious famine disaster,” the Eritrean government said.
