Nine men were arrested Thursday, 22 hours after they allegedly kidnapped a 26-year-old off a street in South-Central Los Angeles, demanded ransom from his family and viciously beat him as the family listened.

The victim, who was hospitalized in stable but guarded condition, was grabbed at gunpoint at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday as he parked and locked his car in the 1300 block of East Walnut Street, Officer Don Cox said. About half a dozen men forced him into one of two vans.

The unidentified man’s family soon began receiving telephone calls asking for “a substantial amount of money,” Cox said. The kidnappers threatened to kill him and viciously pistol-whipped him as the family listened on the phone, police said.

Members of the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division found the man and suspects Thursday evening at an unspecified location in the Wilshire area. The nine are being held in lieu of $1-million bail each at Parker Center.
