Employment Rate Takes Unusual Hit

Much of England’s workforce may have had permission to watch the World Cup, but some of those who didn’t are now finding themselves suspended or fired.

Four factory workers in north England were fired after allegedly leaving work on Wednesday to watch the national team’s 0-0 draw with Nigeria.

That was only one of a number of incidents throughout the country.

“Most employers have acted sensibly throughout the World Cup and workers have responded to that positively,” a GMB union spokesperson said. “The last thing we need is for this to be spoiled by one company trying to make an example of their workers.”
