Elaborate Seeks Change

Share

Victories have been hard to come by for Elaborate since his 10-1 surprise in the 2000 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park.

In 11 starts since, the 7-year-old gelding has only one win--a four-length allowance victory in Inglewood on May 13, 2001.

The chestnut is among five scheduled to run in tonight’s second, a $60,000 allowance at 7 1/2 furlongs. The race is not part of the pick six, which has a carryover of $83,426.

Owned and bred by Trudy McCaffery and John Toffan, and trained by Paco Gonzalez, Elaborate was last seen finishing third, beaten by less than a length, by Kalookan Queen in the Potrero Grande Breeders’ Cup Handicap on March 30 at Santa Anita. Chris McCarron will be aboard tonight.

The compact field is completed by Nick, who won six of nine in his native Chile; Bay Head King, a distant fourth in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap in his Hollywood Park debut May 12; Top Hit and High Wire Act.

Race of the day: The seventh at Hollywood Park is a wide-open turf sprint (5 1/2 furlongs) for 3-year-old fillies running for a $62,500 claiming price.

Who’s hot: Kevin Krigger. The apprentice won three races Thursday and none of the winners were favorites.

Who’s not: Soft Senor. The 4-year-old Senor Speedy colt, who will run in today’s fifth at Belmont Park, is 0 for 11 since the beginning of 2001.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta keying Subpoena on top in the fifth with Take It Outside, Cellular Call and Ancient Traveler in the two hole and all in the third spot.
