3 Ex-Berlin Wall Guards Acquitted in ’62 Shooting
Three former East German border guards were acquitted of shooting a 14-year-old boy as he escaped across the Berlin Wall four decades ago.
The shooting had escalated into a dramatic confrontation, nine months after East Germany’s Communist rulers built the wall to stop a drain of people to West Germany.
The ex-guards faced charges of attempted manslaughter in the 1962 shooting of Wilfried Tews, who requires special shoes to walk as a result of his injuries.
The judge in the case, which opened in 1994, said the court did not establish with certainty the defendants’ guilt.
