Stanley Lloyd Greigg, 71; Filed Complaint That Sparked Watergate
Stanley Lloyd Greigg, 71, a former Iowa congressman who filed the criminal complaint in 1972 that sparked the Watergate investigation, died Thursday of a heart attack in Silver Springs, Md.
As deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Greigg was called to a Washington police station on June 17, 1972, to view a lineup of five burglars who had been caught breaking into the Watergate office complex.
Greigg grew up in Sioux City and earned a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.
He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1959, then returned to Morningside as its dean of men.
He earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University.
In 1961, Greigg began his political career on Sioux City’s City Council and became the city’s mayor in 1964.
He represented Iowa’s 6th District in Congress from 1965-67.
After Watergate, Greigg served as director of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations of the Congressional Budget Office and as finance chairman for Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Washington from 1988 to 1991.
