Parents Should Choose Their Kid’s School

Re “Ruling on Magnet School Gets F From Parents,” June 4:

Your article describing the Orange County Board of Education’s denial of a petition to allow about 22 students to transfer to Troy High School revolved around several families who wanted children who live in one school district to be allowed to transfer to another. The state education code allows families and children to petition county boards of education when their requests are denied.

The board was split, 2 to 2, on this decision (one trustee was absent), with Felix Rocha and myself voting in favor of allowing the petitioners and families to transfer from Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District to the Fullerton School District. State code requires a majority vote to overturn Placentia-Yorba Linda’s earlier denial.

My vote was based on the inalienable right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children. It is my philosophy that parents have the vested and far greater interest in their children’s well-being than any government institution.
