From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Mexican government is investigating allegations by undocumented immigrants that their vehicle was fired upon by Mexican soldiers in an incident that left eight wounded.

The eight were among 23 Mexicans and El Salvadorans packed in a GMC Suburban attempting to enter the U.S. by using a roadless area 25 miles west of this Imperial Valley border town, the U.S. Border Patrol said.

Someone opened fire on the vehicle with a high-powered rifle shortly after midnight Thursday as it approached the U.S.-Mexico border. Three of the eight remain hospitalized, all in stable condition.

Some of the immigrants alleged that the vehicle that opened fire belonged to the Mexican army, which often trains in the area and apprehends suspected immigrant smugglers.

All 23 are being held by the Border Patrol for investigation.
