Rockies Air It Out, 14-11

Someone needs to check the wall behind the Colorado Rockies’ humidor. It seems to have come unplugged.

Todd Zeile hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and the Rockies outslugged the New York Yankees, 14-11, Thursday to close out the highest-scoring three-game series in Coors Field history.

Todd Hollandsworth hit a grand slam as the Rockies overcame an 8-2 deficit, rallying after Roger Clemens was hit in the right forearm by a line drive and forced out of the game.

“Anybody who left after the fifth inning ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Colorado Manager Clint Hurdle said.

Colorado’s use of a humidor to store its baseballs this season had helped drop scoring at Coors Field by four runs per game from a year ago, but the Rockies and Yankees quickly put an end to that.

The two teams combined for 70 runs, along with 95 hits and 15 home runs. The previous record for runs in a three-game series at Coors was 64 between the Rockies and Montreal on May 1-3, 2000.

“I guess the humidor’s broken,” Hurdle said. “It’s got a leak.”
