Majority Short-Changed by Newport Library
Re: “Newport Library Eligible for Funds,” June 8:
As a tax-paying citizen for more than 25 years and a parent in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District for more than six years, I’m confused about Newport Beach’s bid for school funds to build a library that will mostly benefit their city and one school, Mariner’s Elementary.
Why can’t these school district funds be equally apportioned among the rest of the district’s libraries? I know our library could use some of the funding pie. Our librarian each year conducts time-consuming fund-raisers and relies on donations to accumulate funds.
Keeping children safe is a significant concern, but the general public will be prohibited from using this “public” library’s children’s section for about 30 hours per week. As a district taxpayer, I am going to be short-changed. Even with the safety accommodations being made for the joint-use library, nothing comes close to being as safe or comforting as walking down the hall to an on-campus library.
