2 Charged in Fatal Shooting of Courier
Two men were charged with capital murder Friday for allegedly shooting an armored-car guard during a north Long Beach robbery, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office announced.
Daniel Nieves, 20, and Jose Silva, 22, are being held without bail and are scheduled to be arraigned July 2 in Long Beach Superior Court.
They are accused of killing 33-year-old Victor Hurtado during a robbery outside a grocery supply wholesaler at 2300 E. 68th St. in Long Beach. Hurtado was shot in the head Tuesday as he walked out of the Jetro Cash and Carry store with a bag of cash. Prosecutors allege that Nieves fired a handgun as he grabbed the bag from Hurtado, who was a courier for Sectran Security.
Nieves and Silva were arrested Wednesday when they tried to enter the United States from Mexico. A U.S. customs agent thought one of them resembled a photograph police had circulated, said Nancy Tabing, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.
Police said they recovered money believed taken in the robbery.
The district attorney’s office has not decided whether to seek the death penalty against Nieves and Silva.
