I really appreciated Don Heckman’s “Versatile Vocalists Shouldn’t Be Overlooked” (Jazz Spotlight, Feb. 24). There are many talented female vocalists playing small clubs and getting virtually no radio play.

The British chanteuse-songwriter Julia Fordham, with her four-octave range, played at the Coach House, UCLA and the Soho club in Santa Barbara two weeks ago promoting an upcoming album. I caught the Santa Barbara show, and was amazed that Fordham has the same vocal range and strength in person as she does on her inventive recordings.
