Stars Gaining on Sharks

Pierre Turgeon and Jamie Langenbrunner scored 37 seconds apart in the first period, and the Stars beat San Jose, 4-1, Sunday at Dallas to move within five points of the Pacific Division-leading Sharks.

Dallas, which outshot San Jose, 18-3, in the first period, has won three consecutive games.

Derian Hatcher and Joe Nieuwendyk also scored for Dallas, which lost scoring leader Mike Modano to a knee injury in the second period.

Modano didn’t put any pressure on his right leg while being helped off the ice, but the extent of the injury wasn’t known.

Owen Nolan scored for the Sharks.

Phoenix 2, Columbus 1--Ladislav Nagy and Daniel Briere scored first-period goals that stood up in the Coyotes’ victory at Phoenix.

Sean Burke made 24 saves as the Coyotes won for the second time in three games since the Olympic break, pulling into an eighth-place tie with Vancouver in the Western Conference playoff race.
