A 19-year-old ward of the California Youth Authority from San Bernardino County died after collapsing during a basketball game at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility.
Ventura County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials were working Monday to determine what caused his death Sunday night. His name had not been released by Monday afternoon.
“Witnesses confirmed no one was even near him when he collapsed,” said sheriff’s spokesman Eric Nishimoto. “So there’s nothing suspicious or criminal from what we’ve found.”
CYA officials said only that about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, the man was transported from the game at the Camarillo facility to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, but that hospital workers were unable to resuscitate him.
