Fire Retardant Spill Endangers Fish Eggs

A leaky valve on a fire truck spewed concentrated fire retardant into a watershed that feeds a prime spawning habitat for endangered coho salmon, killing fish and exposing several nests of their eggs.
The spill, which occurred Friday as firefighters put out a blaze at a school, made its way into Marin County’s Larsen Creek.
Five gallons of retardant entered the creek, killing three salmon and 10 steelhead trout. But biologist Reuven Walde said the real harm could be to four nests.
