Stanley McCaffrey, 85; 16-Year President of University of Pacific
Stanley McCaffrey, a former president of the University of the Pacific, died March 3 in Moraga, Calif. The cause of death was not reported. He was 85.
McCaffrey, who grew up in Whittier and was a boyhood friend of Richard M. Nixon, was on Nixon’s campaign staff during his unsuccessful presidential race against John F. Kennedy in 1960.
In 1971, McCaffrey became president of the University of the Pacific in Stockton. He spent 16 years working to expand the campus, increase academic departments and raise enrollment. He retired in 1987.
He also served as executive manager of the California Alumni Assn. and as vice president of UC Berkeley.
McCaffrey also was president of Rotary International, a 30,000-chapter service organization.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was awarded a Silver Star and Legion of Merit for gallantry in action in China.
