From Times Staff Reports

“Islam and Violence” is the topic for a free public conference at Chapman University tonight.

In the wake of Sept. 11, “a lot of people have been taking it upon themselves to comment on this topic,” said Sabiha Khan, a spokeswoman for the Southern California chapter of The Council on American-Islamic Relations. The group is co-sponsoring the event with the university and the California Council for the Humanities.

“Certainly, there has been a lot of incorrect information,” she said, “and we felt that the best way to correct these misconceptions is for people who are knowledgeable on the subject to speak for themselves.”

Included on the panel will be Sadullah Khan, executive director and imam of the Islamic Center of Irvine; James Gelvin, a history professor at UCLA; and Lina Kreidie, a political science professor at UC Irvine.

The conference begins at 7 p.m. in the university’s Beckman Hall, Room 404.
