Hayward, Mortillaro Win OCC Faculty Award

Mathematics professor Valerie J. Hayward and fine arts professor Karen G.A. Mortillaro were voted faculty members of the year by their peers at Orange Coast College this week.
They beat 10 other nominees, including controversial instructor Ken Hearlson, who drew national publicity last year after being accused of harassing Muslim students in a post-Sept. 11 classroom debate.
An independent investigation cleared Hearlson of wrongdoing.
School officials did not release where others finished in the voting.
