Sewage Data to Be Reviewed by Scientists
The Orange County Sanitation District said this week that an independent panel of scientists will review data and reports generated by the district’s $5.1-million study to see if the sewage discharged from pipes 41/2 miles offshore is returning to beaches.
Last summer’s study was supposed to determine if a combination of waves, tides and a power plant’s ocean-fed cooling system is drawing the moderately treated sewage back to shore.
Sewage leaks could have contributed to high bacteria levels that caused Huntington Beach’s 1999 closures.
