Biola Coasts to First-Round Win

Abiodun Medupin had 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots as Biola took a 13-point halftime lead and coasted to a 75-46 victory over Barber-Scotia (N.C.) in the first round of the NAIA national tournament at Kansas City.

The Eagles (29-4) had four players in double figures and easily advanced to a second-round game today against the Science & Arts (Okla.)-Carroll (Mont.) winner.

Kevin Augustine scored 14 points as Biola held the Sabres to 31% shooting.

Azusa Pacific 78, Spalding (Ky.) 44--Reserve Jeff Staniland scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for Azusa Pacific (26-7) at Kansas City, Mo. The Cougars advanced to play Auburn Montgomery, which defeated Southern-New Orleans, 56-55.

Azusa Pacific shot 58.6% from the field in the first half to take a 17-point lead. The Cougars held Spalding, which was averaging 87.6 points, to a season-low 44. The Pelicans made only 23.1% of their shots.

Brett Michel had 12 points and Caleb Gervin had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals for Azusa Pacific.

In the women’s tournament:

Brescia (Ky.) 53, Azusa Pacific 52--Kari Jo Edwards made two free throws with three seconds remaining to give Brescia (25-8) its only lead in the game in the first-round victory of the national tournament.

Catherine Solorio and Ruth Taylor scored 14 points each to lead Azusa Pacific (25-8).
