A motorist being chased by police was killed early Friday when he crashed into the center divider of the Orange Freeway in Anaheim and was struck by several cars as he tried to run across northbound lanes, police said.

The chase, at up to 90 mph, began late Thursday in the 300 block of South Lemon Street when police were alerted to a possible auto theft, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

A man driving a Honda Accord with its lights off led police down Broadway and sped through a red light before turning south onto the Orange Freeway.

Police said the driver slammed into the center divider near the Ball Road exit, jumped from the car and bolted across northbound lanes. Several cars hit him, and he was dragged more than 350 feet.

Martinez said it is unclear why the man fled. The car does not appear to have been stolen, he said.
