A man accused of breaking into a home he believed belonged to actress Meg Ryan pleaded no contest to trespassing charges Friday in Malibu Superior Court.

John Michael Hughes, who once falsely told a judge that he and Ryan were married, faces up to one year in prison when he returns to court for sentencing next week. Ryan has said she never met Hughes.

The 30-year-old Florida man, who was convicted last year of trying to enter President Bush’s Texas ranch, is not expected to receive any prison time beyond what he has served since his arrest after the Jan. 6 incident.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Loni Petersen said Friday that she would not recommend additional jail time if “his mental condition continues to improve.”

Judge Lawrence J. Mira will conduct a sentencing hearing Thursday, at which time Petersen will offer testimony from a physician about Hughes’ progress.

Hughes was charged with simple and aggravated trespassing for breaking into the Malibu home of Tomas and Andrea Ryan, who are not related to the actress.
