Cuba is so close to us, yet not [overrun] by Americanism and American commerce. Actually, legally, we’re not allowed to travel there. I flew through Mexico. I went with my sister. She came from New York and flew through Jamaica. We stayed in Havana. We spent our days walking the streets, checking out galleries. There’s some great art there. I’m particularly interested in anything to do with paper, so I went to a few etching presses and letterpress studios. People there have so much spirit and vivaciousness, despite the fact that wages are very low and living conditions aren’t tremendous. The government doesn’t welcome Americans, but the people do.

Discovery: There’s a business going on where people’s homes are made available to tourists. It’s not state legalized. But a lot of it goes on.
