Sharks Keep Lead in Pacific

Owen Nolan scored a goal and Vincent Damphousse had three assists as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Calgary Flames, 4-1, Thursday night at Calgary, Canada, to end a three-game winless skid.

Nolan gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead at 4:45 of the third period. Mike Rathje’s slap shot was wide but deflected to the other side of the net where Nolan whipped a shot past goaltender Roman Turek from a sharp angle.

Brad Stuart, Adam Graves and Scott Thornton also scored for San Jose, which remained atop the Pacific Division, two points ahead of the Kings.

Jeff Shantz scored the lone goal for Calgary, which is winless in its last seven (0-5-2).

Effectively eliminated from the Western Conference playoff race after a 2-5-2 nine-game road trip, Calgary remained 10 points behind the eighth-place Dallas Stars with 11 games left.

Detroit 3, Columbus 2--With tears, silence and eventually cheers, Columbus hockey fans paid their respects to the 13-year-old girl who died after being hit by a puck.

Brittanie Cecil died Monday, two days after being struck by a puck during Columbus’ game against Calgary. The eighth-grader from suburban Dayton was remembered with a moment of silence before the start of Thursday night’s game against Detroit.

Sergei Fedorov’s wraparound goal 25 seconds into overtime was the winner.

New York Rangers 5, Ottawa 2--Newcomers Pavel Bure and Tom Poti each scored at Ottawa as the Rangers ended a four-game losing streak.

Bure, acquired from Florida on Monday, assisted on Eric Lindros’ first-period goal before scoring his 24th of the season in his second game with New York.

New York Islanders 3, Vancouver 2--Chris Osgood stopped Markus Naslund’s penalty shot and finished with 36 saves to lead the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y., to end the Canucks’ five-game winning streak.

New Jersey 4, Nashville 3--Sergei Brylin scored two goals, one on the power play, as the Devils won at Nashville.

Newcomers Jamie Langenbrunner and Joe Nieuwendyk also scored goals, their first points as Devils since being traded from Dallas on Tuesday.

Carolina 3, Florida 2--Martin Gelinas and Ron Francis scored in the third period as the Hurricanes rallied at Raleigh, N.C.

Boston 2, Buffalo 1--Rookie Nick Boynton had a goal and assist, recording his first multipoint game, to lead the Bruins at Buffalo, N.Y.

Washington 4, Toronto 3--Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and had two assists as the Capitals won at Toronto.

Danius Zubrus scored the game-winner--his second goal of the game-- with 3:05 remaining.

The Florida Panthers learned starting goalie Roberto Luongo will be out for the season while rehabbing a torn ligament in his ankle suffered Wednesday in a 4-1 loss to Montreal. Right wing Valeri Bure will also be out for the season after deciding to have surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee.... Chicago Blackhawk winger Steve Sullivan has a separated left shoulder, tests showed. It was not known how long Sullivan might be sidelined.
