Gov. Kempthorne Gets Reelection Bid Underway
Starting his campaign in the hometown of the man shaping up to be his Democratic rival, Republican Gov. Dirk Kempthorne announced in Idaho Falls that he will seek a second term. He said that, despite the state’s economic crisis, he and lawmakers have balanced the budget without raising taxes.
After six years as a U.S. senator, Kempthorne won the state’s top office in 1998 with 67% of the vote.
No serious opposition has surfaced for the May 28 GOP primary, and it appears Kempthorne will face Democrat Jerry Brady, publisher of the newspaper in Idaho Falls, in November.
