Popular Surf Shop Destroyed by Flames
The Beach Hut, a popular surf shop that had become an institution in the tightly knit community in the city’s Pierpont district, was destroyed by a fire early Tuesday.
Investigators are calling the blaze suspicious.
The fire erupted about 3:45 a.m. in the store at Seaward Avenue and Pierpont Boulevard, authorities said.
The Beach Hut, about 100 yards from the ocean, sold and rented surfboards, shirts, wetsuits and surfing paraphernalia.
The shop had long served as a sponsor of surfing contests and rodeos over the years.
It was also known for its regular sponsorship of events for children of the community designed to attract them to surfing.
