Youth Charged As Adult in Shooting
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged a 16-year-old reputed gang member as an adult in connection with the weekend shooting of an Orange County sheriff’s deputy.
Authorities said the teenager, Alejandro Valdovinos, and his 21-year-old brother, Miguel, of Santa Ana shot Sgt. Kurt Vasentine, 45, in the face at point-blank range while the officer was checking out a suspicious car parked in an alley in Lake Forest.
Vasentine was released from the hospital Monday night.
The brothers appeared in court in Santa Ana on Tuesday, but their arraignment was postponed until April 9.
Their bail is set at $1 million each. Both remain in custody.
