An unmanned American spy plane crashed at sea today in the southern Philippines, where it had been used for aerial reconnaissance in a U.S. counter-terrorism training exercise, military officials said.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Erica Smith of the U.S. Pacific Command in Honolulu said the plane “made an emergency water landing on a routine training flight.”

She did not specify the type of aircraft but said it came down about 2 1/2 miles from Zamboanga and was recovered by U.S. troops with the Philippine navy’s help.
