Though not suited to everyone’s taste, the baroque portraits of eccentric characters created by director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson in “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums” seem to grow more delightful with repeated viewings. After the success of their 1996 debut, “Bottle Rocket,” which launched the careers of Anderson, Wilson and brother Luke Wilson, who appears in all three films, the team unleashed Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a manic prep school student at Rushmore Academy determined to win the love of an older woman (Olivia Williams) from an odd millionaire, played by Bill Murray. In last year’s Oscar-nominated “Tenenbaums” screenplay, a family of geniuses (Luke Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller) who peaked as teenagers, grapple with the attempted reconciliation by their prodigal father, Royal (Gene Hackman).
