Music in the Classroom

Share

The L.A. Philharmonic’s attempt to interest new audiences with its Casual Friday program (“Classical and Casual Fridays,” by Adam Bregman, May 2), along with such events as children’s concerts, are merely Band-Aids treating the symptoms rather than the cause.

The dwindling of audiences for serious music can be traced to the fact that there is no music curriculum in the public schools. Sensitivity to music can best be developed in the early grades. This awareness of the aesthetics of music, followed up by a structured music appreciation curriculum, would eventually bring audiences back to the concert halls.

Organizations such as the L.A. Philharmonic should spend their resources on revitalizing music in the public schools rather than on Band-Aid events.
