Hewlett-Packard Co. closed the largest acquisition in the technology industry, ending a divisive merger battle as it bought Compaq Computer Corp. for $18.69 billion in HP stock. The new company officially launches Tuesday, when HP will begin rolling out product plans, announce the appointment of more senior managers and start the process of cutting some 15,000 jobs, about 10% of the new company’s work force.
