MARYLAND

Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend launched her bid to become Maryland’s first female governor as her mother, Ethel Kennedy, and other relatives watched.

Townsend, a Democrat, touted her and Gov. Parris Glendening’s accomplishments in the last eight years, noting the sharp drop in crime. Saying more needs to be done, she advanced a new plan to seek a state family leave law.

She is the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968.

Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley has said he’s also considering seeking the Democratic nomination. The primary is Sept. 10.
