June 14 -- It’s a War Out There

There’s action on all fronts as John Woo’s WWII film “Windtalkers,” starring Nicolas Cage, above, takes on the spy film “The Bourne Identity.” They are sandwiched between two other high-velocity action movies, “Bad Company,” which opens the week before, and Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report,” starring Tom Cruise, which debuts a week later.

July 12 -- No More Mr. Nice Guy

Yes, there are movies for adults this summer--like “Road to Perdition,” a gangster epic featuring Tom Hanks, above, as a hit man. But on the same day, sci-fi fans get the futuristic dragon movie “Reign of Fire,” while the girl surfer film “Blue Crush” aims for the teen audience.

July 19 -- Give a Mouse a Sequel ...

The popular rodent Stuart Little, above, has a return engagement (“Stuart Little 2”), but he has a lot to contend with--Harrison Ford as a Russian submarine commander in “K-19: The Widowmaker” and giant spiders in “Eight Legged Freaks.”

Aug. 2 -- That’s Just Creepy

Mel Gibson, with Abigail Breslin, above, picks up weird vibes from outer space in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” on the same day that renegade stuntman Vin Diesel jumps off buildings for the good of the country in “XXX.”

Aug. 16 -- Comedy Central

The summer season draws to a close with (studios hope) some laughs. Five comedies open the same day: Eddie Murphy in “The Adventures of Pluto Nash,” Dana Carvey as “The Master of Disguise,” Jackie Chan in the adventure-oriented “The Tuxedo,” the romantically inclined “Serving Sara,” with Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley, above, and the satiric “Simone,” with Al Pacino.
