School District Is Given Eminent Domain on Site
The Santa Ana Unified School District won an eminent-domain action Thursday on a hotly contested site for a new elementary school, district officials said.
The proposed Lorin Griset Elementary School for a vacant 9-acre property between the Santa Ana Freeway and Flower Street is opposed by some residents who say the new school will bring more traffic to their quiet, historic neighborhood.
The city had approved 36 luxury homes for the lot, but the eminent-domain action means the district can now force the developer to sell the land for the new school.
Earlier this year, residents opposed to the school filed a lawsuit alleging environmental studies done by the district were inadequate. That suit is pending.
