He Says Two Writers Lacked Horse Power
The Times’ thoroughbred racing-challenged writers, Mike Penner and Bill Plaschke, don’t have a clue. There has never been worse sports coverage by anyone than their May 5 stories after the Kentucky Derby. It’s time to assign these guys to ice skating, where the judges share their mentality, i.e., the winner should be one of the favorites, not some longshot.
Plaschke says War Emblem beat 17 mostly faster horses. He ran the ninth-fastest Derby in history! Penner says the race wasn’t exciting because Baffert won again by buying the race.
Penner and Plaschke should have to follow airline pilot rules, no mint juleps during the eight hours preceding writing. Please don’t send them to Baltimore or New York.
