Protesters Seek Choices Beyond Nursing Homes

From Times Wire Reports

More than 150 people in wheelchairs staged a Mother’s Day protest outside the White House to demand that President Bush fund alternatives to nursing homes for the elderly and the disabled.

Scores of people in wheelchairs lined Pennsylvania Avenue on either side of a giant Mother’s Day “card” addressed to the president’s wife, Laura, and his mother, Barbara. It asked them to urge Bush to support funding for measures such as assistance to help people live at home rather than in institutions.

“There is a better way to treat our grandmothers, mothers, daughters and sisters,” said the placard, adding that most people in nursing homes are women.
