State Checking Private Wells for Contamination

State water officials are investigating why several private wells in the area are contaminated with chemicals that may cause cancer and other health problems.
The state learned of the contamination more than three years ago, but a lack of funding prevented investigation, said officials with the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The water board expects to release tests this week for about 40 wells. Most residents have been drinking bottled water.
