Fines Issued for Asbestos Violations at Reservoirs
Investigations at East Bay reservoirs have resulted in citations for asbestos-related safety violations.
State regulators issued $3,350 in citations to the East Bay Municipal Utility District for violations at Oakland’s Central Reservoir and Berkeley’s Claremont Reservoir, including one deemed as “serious.”
The investigation was the result of a complaint in March by Local 444 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The union said the reservoir roofs, which are made with a material that contains asbestos, are corroded and a danger to workers.
District spokesman Charles Hardy said the roofs have been adequately maintained.
