Woman Becomes First to Be Granted Divorce
JORDAN
*
A Jordanian woman became the first to be granted a divorce under a law amended in January, a court official said in Amman. Previously, only men in this Islamic nation could initiate a divorce.
The woman, identified as “S,” had filed for the divorce on the grounds that she hated her husband, “M,” and they could not live together. Her request was granted last week.
The husband accepted the divorce after she agreed to return a gold coin, which was part of her dowry, and renounced her claim to $7,000 in a marriage contract.
