Very Few Chiropractors Cover for Prostitution

Share

The number of alleged cases of prostitution in chiropractic offices reported upon in “Kinky Therapy for Your Back” (May 3) amounts to involvement by roughly 0.1% of licensed chiropractors in California. This number is of no statistical significance and should not be delivered to the public in a way that reflects poorly upon all chiropractors who practice ethically and legally to deliver quality care.

The California Chiropractic Assn. strongly supports disciplinary action against any professional who does not conduct legal business practices. None of the 11 chiropractors disciplined by the state chiropractic board over the past two years for involvement in prostitution were members of the California Chiropractic Assn.

Massage therapy performed under the direction of a licensed chiropractor can be beneficial, and virtually all massage therapists who work out of chiropractic offices are well trained and supervised appropriately.

Should there be a future trend toward prostitution being conducted under the guise of massage therapy, local authorities may be prompted to perform more stringent investigations prior to issuing massage permits. Permits for massage are issued to medical offices, massage parlors, acupuncture clinics, health spas and other businesses, in addition to chiropractic offices. Your story unfairly singles out the chiropractic profession.
