A brush fire burned 125 acres Wednesday in the Hasley Canyon area of Val Verde before about 300 firefighters and five water-dropping helicopters were able to contain it, officials said.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged in the blaze, which started about 8:35 a.m. in medium-to-heavy brush near Hasley Canyon Road and Burlwood Drive, north of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Albert Flores said.

County firefighters, aided by crews from the U.S. Forest Service and Ventura County, had the fire fully contained by about 11:40 a.m., Flores said.

Firefighters dug a break around the perimeter of the fire to prevent it from moving uphill toward homes, while helicopters dropped thousands of gallons of water, Flores said.

Unusually mild weather and winds, as well as brush clearance by residents, helped firefighters quickly control the blaze, officials said.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

It was the second canyon fire in the area in two weeks. A blaze last week charred nearly 5,000 acres in Bouquet Canyon.

“With the hot and dry weather we’ve been having, this is going to be one of the biggest fire seasons yet,” Flores said.

Fire season normally ends in October.
