Getting an Education in How Some May Deal With the Rising Cost of College
Supplemental financial aid? The police log of UCLA’s Daily Bruin newspaper reported the other day that “someone was seen collecting money out of a water fountain located at 300 Medical Plaza.” The fountain sighting, comes on the heels, so to speak, of another Daily Bruin item about “a woman wearing a business suit [who] solicited sex from a passerby on Bruin Walk near Kerckhoff Hall.”
Escape from L.A.: Mention has been made here of European towns with catchy names, such as Orgy and Condom in France and Chaos in Portugal. Well, Judy Armstrong found another. She snapped a shot of a signpost telling motorists they were leaving a town near Rome (see photo). Armstrong wondered if the town name was “a comment on Italian drivers.” In any event, she said, she keeps the picture in her office as a reminder to stay calm. We could use copies of that signpost on the freeways.
It’s a jungle up here: Rumor has it that San Diego may lose its Chargers football team to L.A. if a new stadium is built downtown. But is that all? Arthur Purcell saw a sign posted at 5th and Olive that said: “San Diego Zoo Parking.” Maybe it was a movie prop for someone filming here.
Then again there does seem to be a lot of secrecy involved in L.A.’s downtown redevelopment scheme.
Guide to dining adventurously: Hi, my name is Steve, and I’m your server today (see accompanying). Let’s start off with a kindly soybean drink discovered by my colleague Cherry Gee. It sounds more palatable than the splintery seafood found by David Graham of Laguna Niguel and the not-so-fragrant meat dish spotted by Duncan Reed of Simi Valley.
Bizarre moments in local TV news: The latest occurred when Channel 2 anchor Gretchen Carr popped up on Channel 9’s telecast of the Laker game to plug something on her own station. Viacom owns both KCAL and KCBS.
But it gets stranger. Carr was not promoting a newscast but the KCBS potboiler “JAG.” Or did she think it was a news documentary?
Such a sensitive profession: “When I read your ‘worst client experience’ stories, I was reminded of a ‘worst lawyer experience,’” writes Lois McKinney.
“During a deposition regarding the estate of a recently deceased acquaintance, each time the deposing attorney asked a question about conversations I’d had with the deceased he’d end with ‘while she was alive.’ Finally, I said, ‘Why do you keep saying “while she was alive”? I assure you I have had no conversations with her since she died.’”
If the name fits: Tim Connaghan points out that the director of marketing for Adventures at Sea Yacht Charters is Kathy Leek.
