Barry Bonds hit his 583rd home run, tying Mark McGwire for fifth place on the career list and leading the San Francisco Giants to a 12-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Phoenix.

Bonds, who hit 73 homers last year to break McGwire’s single-season record, lofted a two-run shot off Arizona reliever Eddie Oropesa in the sixth inning for his 16th homer--one behind Sammy Sosa for the major league lead.

Bonds needs three more to catch Frank Robinson for fourth place.

David Bell homered twice and drove in three runs for the Giants, the second multihomer game of his career.

He hit a leadoff shot in the third inning off Arizona starter Miguel Batista and a two-run drive in the sixth off Mike Morgan (1-1) that gave San Francisco a 5-4 lead.

Later in the sixth, Bonds made it 7-4 when he pulled a 2-and-2 pitch off the foul pole in right field with Ramon Martinez aboard.

Marvin Benard capped the six-run inning with a two-run single.

Benito Santiago drove in three runs for the Giants, who won for the third time in seven games, and Jeff Kent had two RBIs.

Arizona right fielder Danny Bautista dislocated his left shoulder diving for a ball in the second inning and left the game.

Colorado 5, San Diego 3--Brent Butler and pinch-hitter Jose Ortiz had RBI singles in the eighth inning to lift the Rockies at Denver.

Todd Zeile opened the eighth off reliever Jeremy Fikac (3-3) with a grounder that skipped past third baseman Sean Burroughs for a two-base error.

Mark Little entered as a pinch-runner, and Butler, a utility infielder who was starting only his third game of the season, doubled down the left-field line.

Butler then scored on Ortiz’s single to left.

Kent Mercker (1-0) pitched the seventh and eighth to earn the win, and Jose Jimenez pitched the ninth for his 11th save in as many opportunities.

Colorado’s Mike Hampton went six innings, giving up eight hits and three runs and departing with the score tied, 3-3.

Padre starter Brian Lawrence gave up 12 hits and three runs in seven innings.

St. Louis 3, Houston 2--J.D. Drew ended a one-for-17 slump with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning at St. Louis.

The Cardinals are 8-1 on the home stand with one game to go, the series finale today.

Drew, who didn’t start the last two games because of his struggles, struck out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. In the ninth, hit a full-count pitch from Ricky Stone (2-2) well beyond the right-field wall for his seventh homer.

Cincinnati 6, Florida 2--Todd Walker hit the first grand slam of his career, Cincinnati’s second in two games, and added a solo homer to lead the Reds at Cincinnati.

Walker hit his slam in the fifth as the NL Central leaders once again used one swing to deflate the struggling Marlins.

The Reds have four grand slams in May, a franchise record for one month. They’ve hit a slam in each of their last three games at Cinergy Field.

Florida fell to 2-7 on a 14-game trip, the longest in franchise history. Marlin pitchers have given up 19 homers in those nine games, four of them grand slams.

Philadelphia 5, New York 2--Former Dodger Terry Adams pitched six strong innings for the Phillies at Philadelphia.

Adams (2-3) gave up two runs and nine hits. The converted reliever, who signed an incentive-laden contract with the Phillies last off-season, has yet to pitch seven innings in nine starts.

Pat Burrell gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double off Al Leiter (5-3).

In 113 at-bats against the Mets, Burrell has 11 homers and 35 RBIs.

Leiter, who began with a major league-leading 1.74 ERA, gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings. It was just the second time in 10 starts he gave up more than three earned runs.

Leiter retired the first two batters before Scott Rolen and Bobby Abreu hit singles in the first.

Burrell then lined a double to left-center field, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.
