It’s No Wonder Teachers Refuse to Do Extra Work
Re “Educators Cut Out Extras in Protest,” May 17:
It is easy to understand the frustration that caused Richard Glick and other Capistrano Unified School District teachers to drop unpaid and unappreciated voluntary duties. The district will not pay Glick, who donates four-hour tutoring sessions for Advanced Placement students and often pays for their pizza out of his own pocket, yet it finds $30,000 to pay contractors to do the same job. While 25 of 28 Orange County school districts have settled for raises of 4% or more, Capistrano Unified will not give the teachers the requested 2.5% pay raise because they are strapped for cash. With this kind of slap in the face, is it any wonder the Capistrano Unified teachers are angry?
