The historic Wilshire Country Club in Hancock Park has begun a $10-million renovation and expansion of its Mediterranean-style clubhouse.

The expansion and interior remodeling, which will include the addition of a red clay tile roof with broad eaves, arched openings and iron railings, is aimed at recapturing the character of the original building.

The project was designed by Los Angeles architect Scott Johnson of Johnson Fain Partners.

The 48,000-square-foot clubhouse will be renovated and expanded by 3,500 square feet, and 2,200 square feet of outdoor terrace will be added.

A new tree-lined driveway will lead to a heavy-timber porte-cochere. At the western side of the clubhouse, an expansive terrace paved with red terra cotta tile will provide additional outdoor dining areas. A new outdoor courtyard will feature a hand-painted tile fountain and wood trellis.

Work began in April, and the project is slated for completion by summer 2003.

“Our renovation will enhance the benefits of membership and at the same time make a significant contribution to preserving Hancock Park’s history for future generations,” said Gerald Palmer, president of Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919.
