Dynamic Dollase Duo

Share

The father-and-son training duo of Wally and Craig Dollase has been hot through the first five weeks of Hollywood Park’s spring-summer meet.

The elder Dollase has won with five of his first 12 runners while Craig has won with six of 20. He also had a big victory out of town Monday, when Swept Overboard, an 11-1 shot who had been beaten as the favorite in his previous two races in California, easily won the $750,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.

Both Dollases have a chance to improve on their win percentages today.

Craig will start probable favorite Pali Princess in the first, a six-furlong race for $50,000 3-year-old fillies. She should be hard to beat with the return to the main track, as she has won three of her last four on dirt. Patrick Valenzuela, who leads the jockey standings, will ride.

In the sixth, a 1 1/16-mile contest for older maidens, father and son will go head to head. Wally will send out favorite Pressure Play while Craig will be represented by Ivan Motley.

A 4-year-old gelded son of Capote, Pressure Play has lost at 5-2 and 17-10 in his most recent races, but a duplication of his last might be enough to get him his first win.

Ivan Motley, a 3-year-old Peaks and Valleys colt, was third in the same race that Pressure Play exits. He was beaten by three lengths in the fifth on May 11.

Race of the day: Magical Nature, victimized by a questionable ride in her last start, will take on eight other 3-year-old fillies at a mile on the turf in Hollywood Park’s seventh race.

Who’s hot: Laura De Seroux. The trainer won two Grade I races in three days last weekend at Hollywood Park. She also has the pleasure of looking after the nation’s best female dirt runner (Azeri) and the top female turfer (Astra).

Who’s not: Certain pick-six players. Many serious bettors took a big loss Monday when the pick six returned only $629.20 on a card that had a $1-million guaranteed pool.
